Más Madrid and Izquierda Unida begin discussions to run together in the 2027 municipal elections in Collado Villalba, with the backing of 93% of the IU local assembly. Podemos claims to have been excluded from the process.
Negotiations between Más Madrid and Izquierda Unida for a joint candidacy in Collado Villalba have officially begun. The initial agreement, approved by 93% of the local IU assembly, aims to unite leftist forces to provide an alternative to the current municipal management.
A project focused on public services and housing
The spokesperson for Más Madrid, Gonzalo Díaz, explained that the process is in an "initial phase" to "explore the details of whether we can build a common project." The proposal focuses on improving public services, sustainability, and access to housing, three priorities they consider essential for the residents of the locality.
Díaz has opened the door to the participation of social collectives and independent individuals, aiming to gather support beyond political parties. "We want a broad project that represents the majority of the villagers," he stated.
Podemos claims to have been sidelined
The reaction from Podemos was swift. The purple formation claims they have been excluded from the process after months of negotiations with IU. According to their version, Más Madrid communicated weeks ago that "not with Podemos," which would have halted the dialogue they had maintained with Izquierda Unida for five months.
"The lack of unity could lead to an unsustainable situation for residents," warned a Podemos spokesperson, who called for reflection to avoid repeating the "mistake" of the past elections in 2027.
In the last municipal elections, the division of the left in Collado Villalba facilitated the victory of the Partido Popular, which governs with an absolute majority. Podemos warns that, without a united candidacy, the scenario could repeat itself.
IU defends its mandate and bets on daily work
The spokesperson for Izquierda Unida responded to the accusations by reminding that their assembly has given them a "firm mandate" to start talks with Más Madrid. "Unity is not generated so much with statements, but with daily work," he emphasized, making it clear that the formation remains open to adding sensitivities, but without closing the door to anyone.
For now, the negotiations are in an exploratory stage, with no defined deadlines for reaching an agreement. The intention is to present a solid candidacy that can challenge the PP for the mayoralty in 2027.
What does this mean for the residents of Collado Villalba?
If the alliance succeeds, the residents of Collado Villalba could have a more cohesive government alternative. The current popular administration has been criticized by the opposition on issues such as street cleaning, public transport, and the lack of affordable housing. A joint leftist candidacy could change the balance of power in the municipality.
The coming weeks will be crucial to see if Más Madrid and IU manage to finalize a common program and whether Podemos decides to join or compete separately. Meanwhile, residents are closely watching the political pulse in their locality.
