The Getafe City Council has launched a new recreational area for dogs in El Bercial, the second of 2026, with an investment of over 50,000 euros. The city now has 14 dog areas.
Getafe has inaugurated this month a new dog area in the neighbourhood of El Bercial, a space of over 2,000 square metres intended for the recreation and exercise of dogs. The facility, located at the junction of Bequerel Street and Pilar Bardem Street, is the second that the City Council has established so far in 2026, following the one opened in January in Los Molinos.
With this opening, the municipality reaches a total of 14 dog areas distributed across its various neighbourhoods, a figure that reflects the Municipal Government's commitment to promoting coexistence between pet owners and other residents. The Maintenance Councillor, Roberto Fernández, has highlighted the importance of these spaces: “Dog areas are necessary spaces because they promote orderly coexistence, improve the health of animals, and help make neighbourhoods friendlier.”
The new infrastructure has involved a municipal investment of over 50,000 euros. The works have included the preparation of the land, which exceeds 2,000 square metres, and the installation of a 250-metre perimeter fence to ensure the safety of both pets and pedestrians passing through the area.
Inside the enclosure, the main attraction is a complete agility circuit, designed with different obstacles for dogs to train, develop their balance and coordination, and engage in specific physical activity. Additionally, the City Council has equipped the area with new urban furniture, including benches, bins, and an informative sign with the rules of use.
The opening of this dog area responds to the demand from the residents of El Bercial, who requested a fenced space where they could safely let their dogs off-leash. Until now, many owners were forced to travel to other neighbourhoods to find an equipped area. With this new facility, it is expected to relieve other dog areas in the municipality and provide a quality alternative in one of the largest green spaces in the neighbourhood.
Councillor Roberto Fernández has emphasised that the City Council will continue to invest in this type of infrastructure: “We will continue to support areas where dogs can exercise and socialise safely, while also caring for the environment, cleanliness, and the rest of the residents' peace.” The councillor has reminded that the maintenance of these areas is the responsibility of the municipal parks and gardens service, which takes care of daily cleaning and the condition of the furniture.
Getafe thus stands out as one of the municipalities in the southern area with the most dog spaces per inhabitant. The network of dog areas includes facilities in neighbourhoods such as Getafe Norte, Sector III, Las Margaritas, Buenavista, Juan de la Cierva, and Los Molinos, among others. The Maintenance Department plans to continue expanding this network based on community needs and land availability.
For the residents of El Bercial, the new dog area represents a relief, as until now they had to travel several kilometres to find a similar space. The chosen location, at the junction of Bequerel and Pilar Bardem, is a frequent passage for walkers and runners, which will help integrate dog use with other outdoor activities.
The City Council has reminded that the use of dog areas is free and that owners must comply with basic coexistence rules: pick up after their dogs, keep them under control, and respect the peace of the neighbours. The informative sign installed at the entrance clearly outlines these guidelines.
With this new opening, Getafe reinforces its commitment to animal welfare and the creation of spaces that promote respectful coexistence among all citizens. The investment of over 50,000 euros is part of the plan to improve green areas and municipal facilities that the Municipal Government develops throughout the year.
