The City Council of Getafe has set up the Air Base (ACAR) to accommodate residents of Robledo de Chavela evacuated due to the fires. The council manages food through emergency contracts with local restaurants.
The City Council of Getafe has launched a reception device for residents evacuated from Robledo de Chavela due to the forest fires affecting the Community of Madrid. Since Friday night, the military facilities of the Getafe Air Base (ACAR) have served as a refuge for families who have had to leave their homes.
The mayor of Getafe, Sara Hernández, has expressed her solidarity with those affected and thanked the emergency services for their work. “Getafe is a supportive city, and it will always extend a hand to those who need it most,” she stated in a statement.
The Getafe council has taken on the management of food for the evacuees, for which it has processed emergency contracts with local restaurants and regional houses. Additionally, companies like Costco and Mercadona have donated hygiene and personal care products.
Among those accommodated are around twenty families with minors. The municipal protocol has also considered companion animals: the Animal Protection Centre has transported food for their care.
The coordination of the device is the responsibility of the Local Police of Getafe and the Civil Protection volunteer group. LYMA and the departments of Sports, Maintenance, Signage, and Internal Regime also collaborate.
The mayor wanted to acknowledge the work of all those involved, from firefighters to municipal personnel, in a situation she described as a “tragedy.” The City Council keeps the necessary resources active as long as the emergency lasts.
The evacuees will remain at the ACAR until the authorities determine it is safe to return to their homes. Getafe thus joins the network of solidarity deployed in the region in response to the forest fires.
