Colmenar Viejo is preparing for a weekend full of activities for all ages. From this Friday, July 24, to Sunday, July 26, the municipality will offer summer dances, the traditional Grandparents' Day celebration, free cinema at the Bullring, and the municipal pool in full operation, along with cultural exhibitions in the libraries.
The Department of Seniors has organised two special events for the older residents. Tonight, starting at 22:00 hours, the Music Kiosk on the Esplanade of the Bullring will host a summer dance open to seniors and their families, featuring a live performance by the Trío Péndulo. Admission is free, and a large turnout is expected.
Tomorrow, Saturday, the El Vivero Social Centre, located at 22 Remedios Avenue, will be the venue for Grandparents' Day, which will begin at 19:30 hours. During the event, several notable individuals from the senior community will be honoured. The day will combine recognition with celebration: a musical group will provide entertainment, and all attendees will enjoy a catering service included in the event.
On Sunday, summer cinema returns to the Bullring with the screening of 'Toy Story 5' at 22:00 hours. The film, directed by Andrew Stanton and McKenna Harris, brings back popular characters Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie, who this time must face the arrival of Lilypad, a frog-shaped tablet that becomes Bonnie's favourite toy. The film reflects on how technology influences the way children play and interact, while the protagonists strive to remain relevant and convey the value of friendship and imagination.
With a duration of 102 minutes, the film is not recommended for children under 7 years old. Tickets, priced at 3 euros, can be purchased at the Bullring box office two hours before the screening begins. In addition to swimming, the pool offers the Bibliopiscina service, which allows users to borrow books and participate in reading animation workshops without leaving the premises, combining summer leisure with promoting reading among both young and old.
Those who prefer a quieter activity can visit the exhibitions open in the municipal libraries. Throughout June, the Miguel de Cervantes and Pablo Ruiz Picasso libraries are hosting the 'American Literature' exhibition in their Adult Room, while the Miguel de Cervantes and Mario Vargas Llosa libraries are displaying the 'Bugs' exhibition in their Children's Room.
The Picasso Cultural Centre also continues its exhibition programme. In the Picasso room, visitors can see 'Brazilian Fantasy' by artist Jorge Matheus until July 30, a collection of paintings, illustrations, and prints that combines various techniques—from canvas to digital format and recycling—to bring the viewer closer to a mythical and essential Brazil, straddling the line between realism and abstraction.
In the lobby of the same centre, Juan Pablo Domingo García presents 'Nearby Landscapes', a collection of 16 oil and acrylic paintings on canvas and board depicting everyday landscapes from the artist's immediate surroundings, also on display until July 30. Additionally, in the Javier Villán room, there is an exhibition of the Colmenar Viejo Antique Photography Contest, dedicated to recovering the visual memory of the municipality. Visiting hours for these exhibitions are Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 14:00 hours, remaining closed on weekends.
