The celebration of Spain's progression to the World Cup final ended with incidents in the centre of Madrid. The National Police charged against fans who blocked traffic in Recoletos, and three people were treated for minor injuries.
The night of jubilation for Spain's qualification for the World Cup final in the United States turned tense in the heart of Madrid. National Police officers intervened with charges in Cibeles Square and the Paseo de Recoletos to disperse a group of fans who had blocked traffic, according to police sources.
The events occurred shortly after eleven at night, when thousands of supporters gathered in the centre following the Spanish team's victory over France. Most celebrated with chants, flags, and flares, but dozens of people invaded the roadway of Recoletos, disrupting traffic for several minutes.
Police Intervention Without Arrests
Faced with some fans' refusal to clear the road, officers made several charges to restore order. No arrests were made, confirmed sources from the investigation. The intervention managed to restore normal traffic flow and prevent the disturbances from escalating.
The emergency services of Samur-Civil Protection treated three people for minor injuries. None required hospital transfer, according to initial information provided by the medical staff.
Mass Celebration in Cibeles
The party began shortly after the final whistle, with hundreds of fans making their way to the Cibeles fountain, a regular meeting point for major sporting victories in the capital. The majority of attendees celebrated peacefully, but a minority group caused the incidents by blocking traffic.
Local residents, especially those in the Recoletos neighbourhood, suffered from traffic disruptions and noise until after midnight. The Municipal Police assisted in the operation to divert traffic and ensure safety.
“The intervention was necessary to prevent greater damage and protect the fans themselves,” police sources stated.
Such disturbances are not new during mass sporting celebrations in Madrid. As recently as 2024, following Real Madrid's Champions League victory, similar incidents were reported in Cibeles. Authorities recommend that fans celebrate in designated areas and respect the officers' instructions to avoid risks.
In anticipation of the final on Sunday, the Madrid City Council plans a special security operation in Cibeles Square and surrounding areas, with traffic restrictions and increased public transport. Fans wishing to celebrate a potential victory should check mobility restrictions on the municipal website.
