The price of 98 E5 petrol in Madrid stands at €2.239 per litre, the highest of all cities analysed, according to data from the Ministry for Ecological Transition. Diesel A also hits record highs in the capital.
The wallets of Madrid drivers are taking another hit. According to the latest data from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, as of July 21, the maximum price of 98 E5 petrol in Madrid reaches €2.239 per litre, the highest of all analysed Spanish cities. Following are Barcelona, with a peak of €2.219, and Valencia, with €1.929.
Diesel A: also soaring in the capital
Diesel A is not far behind. In Madrid, the maximum recorded price is €1.899 per litre, while the minimum is €1.487. In Barcelona, Diesel A reaches a maximum of €1.864 and a minimum of €1.339. Valencia, for its part, records a maximum of €1.844 and a minimum of €1.495.
For those opting for Premium Diesel A, Madrid again tops the table with a peak price of €1.934 per litre, compared to €1.919 in Barcelona and €1.974 in Valencia. The minimum in the capital is €1.497.
As for 95 E5 petrol, the maximum price in Madrid is €1.839 per litre, with a minimum of €1.429. In Barcelona, the maximum drops to €1.784 and the minimum to €1.349. Valencia records a maximum of €1.764 and a minimum of €1.428.
Tips from the DGT to save fuel
In light of these prices, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) reminds that efficient driving can save up to €500 a year. The key is to adopt habits behind the wheel that reduce consumption without sacrificing mobility.
One of the main tips is to drive in higher gears whenever possible, respecting speed limits. Modern engines respond well at low revs, which minimises fuel consumption. For instance, before reaching 50 km/h, the fourth or fifth gear should already be engaged.
Anticipation is another key factor. Between 30% and 50% of fuel consumption depends on driving style. Maintaining a constant speed and a safe distance avoids unnecessary braking and acceleration. When leaving a traffic light, it is best to accelerate gradually.
It is also recommended to turn off the engine during long stops if the car does not have a Start/Stop system. And, of course, check tyre pressure and avoid carrying unnecessary weight in the boot.
The use of air conditioning also influences consumption: at low speeds, it is better to open the windows; on the motorway, it is more efficient to use the air conditioning.
City comparison
In addition to Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia, the report includes data from other cities such as Seville, where Diesel A reaches a maximum of €1.799 and a minimum of €1.399. For 95 E5 petrol, Seville marks a peak of €1.795.
In all of them, 98 E5 petrol is the most expensive, with differences of up to 30 cents between the maximum and minimum prices within the same city. However, Madrid drivers are the ones paying the most per litre for this fuel.
The Ministry updates these prices periodically, so it is recommended to check for the cheapest petrol stations before refuelling. Mobile apps and official websites allow for real-time comparisons.
For the average driver, filling a 50-litre tank of 98 E5 petrol in Madrid can cost up to €111.95 if paying the maximum price, compared to €77.45 if finding the minimum. The difference of nearly €35 encourages careful consideration before filling up.
