Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid participates in CELLCOL2, a pioneering trial using stem cells to regenerate the liver and operate on inoperable liver metastases.
The public University Hospital 12 de Octubre in the Community of Madrid has initiated its participation in the CELLCOL2 research project, a multicentre clinical trial studying the use of stem cells to regenerate the liver in patients with colon cancer and liver metastases. The initiative, led by the San Carlos Clinical Hospital, also in Madrid, is funded by the Carlos III Health Institute.
The main objective is to increase the volume of healthy liver tissue to allow the removal of tumours that were initially considered inoperable. Thus, patients who currently have no surgical options could potentially undergo successful interventions. Beyond colon cancer, the results could open new treatment avenues for other severe liver diseases.
12 de Octubre acts as a key centre for patient recruitment and provides a top-level multidisciplinary medical team. Specialists in General and Digestive Surgery, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Radiodiagnosis, Haematology, and Clinical Pharmacology participate, alongside advanced technological and scientific infrastructure.
