More than 7,500 people followed the World Cup final on the giant screen set up by the City Council in Plaza de Cervantes. The security team attended to 62 minor incidents and the cleaning crew removed nearly 2,000 kilos of waste.
The Plaza de Cervantes in Alcalá de Henares turned into a sea of red shirts and flags this Sunday. Over 7,500 people gathered to watch the World Cup final on the giant screen installed by the City Council next to the Capilla del Oidor. This figure, recorded by the Local Police Drone Unit during the second half of extra time, reflects the atmosphere experienced in the heart of the city.
An impeccable operation for a night of celebration
The mayor, Judith Piquet, thanked attendees for their exemplary behaviour and unconditional support for the national team. In her statements, she highlighted that the day passed without any notable incidents, with families, young people, and fans of all ages sharing the excitement of the match.
To ensure safety, the Department of Security deployed a team of 26 local police officers and 15 Civil Protection volunteers. Additionally, a basic life support ambulance and a field hospital were set up. The Drone Unit enhanced surveillance and control of the area.
Civil Protection attended to 62 minor incidents, mainly heat strokes and small cuts from glass. There were no serious emergencies to report. As a preventive measure, the main fountains in the city were cordoned off to avoid accidents and protect urban heritage.
Express cleaning: 2,000 kilos of waste removed in one night
The cleaning team worked before and after the match to leave Plaza de Cervantes looking brand new. Workers removed nearly 2,000 kilograms of waste, working through the night to ensure the city centre was in perfect condition by morning.
The City Council wanted to thank all attendees for their civic behaviour and support for the Spanish national team. The camaraderie shown by the people of Alcalá turned Plaza de Cervantes into the main meeting point of the city to experience a historic event.
For those who missed it, the next chance to watch football on a giant screen could come with the next major international competition. However, we will have to wait for the next occasion when the national team competes in a final again.
