The Alcalá de Henares City Council has started this week the expansion works of the Jiménez de Quesada car park, which will add 100 parking spaces. The investment amounts to nearly one million euros, financed 95% by the Community of Madrid.
The Alcalá de Henares City Council has begun this week the expansion works of the car park located between Camino del Juncal and Jiménez de Quesada street. The project, which has an investment close to one million euros, will create a hundred new parking spaces in an area with high local demand.
The project is financed 95% by the Community of Madrid through the Regional Investment Plan (PIR). The deputy mayor and councillor for Urbanism, Cristina Alcañiz, has highlighted that these 100 spaces will be added to the 350 recently enabled in the Arboreto de Reyes Católicos area, reinforcing the parking capacity in one of the areas with the greatest need.
The works include leveling the ground to integrate the new space with the existing car park, as well as reorganising traffic to improve road safety and the flow of circulation. All of this is compatible with the protection of the archaeological zone where it is located, as the site sits on part of the ancient Roman city of Complutum.
The new structure has been designed in a grid pattern, following the orientation of the cardos (north-south) and decumanos (east-west) of the Roman city. Additionally, two pedestrian paths will be created that cross the plot from side to side in an east-west direction, extending to Jiménez de Quesada street via two new pedestrian crossings. These pathways will feature landscaped areas, urban furniture, and viewpoints over the surrounding land, one of which will be oriented towards the documented remains of a Roman temple.
In the wooded area of the northeast, next to the building between Nicolás Ovando street and the car park, the existing trees will be preserved and the area will be cleared. The total area of action is approximately 12,985 square metres.
The expansion responds to a historical demand from local residents, who have been calling for more parking spaces and improved mobility. With this intervention, the council hopes to alleviate parking pressure in the neighbourhood and facilitate access to nearby services and shops.
The works, which will extend over the coming months, will be carried out during the daytime to minimise disruption to residents. The City Council has stated that it will keep the public informed about the progress of the works and any possible temporary traffic disruptions.
This action is part of the Regional Investment Plan of the Community of Madrid, which co-finances infrastructure improvement projects in the municipalities of the region. In Alcalá de Henares, the PIR has allowed for the development of several mobility and urbanism initiatives in recent years.
With the completion of this expansion, the Jiménez de Quesada neighbourhood will have a total of 450 new parking spaces in recent months, adding the 350 from the Arboreto de Reyes Católicos and the 100 from this new action. The aim is to improve the quality of life for residents and promote a more accessible and orderly city model.
