The Community of Madrid team has claimed the title of the Men's Absolute FFAA Championship 2026 after winning the grand final against the host, the Principality of Asturias, by a close 4.5-2.5 at the Municipal Course of Llanes.
The Madrid team, captained by Carlos de Corral, with Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño as coach and José Mata as physical trainer, demonstrated great mental strength to overcome the initial advantages of Asturias and take the title in a thrilling day.
The final began with the doubles matches (foursomes). The Asturian pair formed by Javier Neira and Álvaro Huidobro won by 1 up against Sergio Jiménez and Álvaro Pastor, giving the first advantage to the locals. However, the Madrid response was immediate: Jorge Martín and Pedro García defeated Pau Sánchez and Ignacio Adaro also by 1 up, leaving the scoreboard tied at the end of the morning session.
In the individual matches in the afternoon, the local team started strong. Ignacio Adaro overcame Jorge Hao by a convincing 5/4, igniting Asturian hopes. But the Madrilenians reacted with determination. Álvaro Pastor balanced the scales by defeating Javier Neira 3/1, restoring equality to the scoreboard.
From there, the Community of Madrid team took definitive control. Sergio Jiménez defeated Pelayo Fernández by 1 up, while Pedro García beat Álvaro R. Huidobro 2/1. The final duel between Jorge Martín and Pau Sánchez ended in a tie, closing the classification with a 4.5-2.5 score in favour of Madrid.
The path to the title was not easy. In the semifinals, held the previous day, Madrid faced Andalucía in a tense match that was decided by the narrowest of margins (4-3). The Andalusians came back from the initial Madrid dominance in the doubles, but Sergio Jiménez triumphed over Yago Horno 3/2 in the star match, securing a place in the final. Meanwhile, Asturias reached the final after crushing Catalonia, first in the Medal Play phase, by a resounding 6.5-0.5.
The title represents a new success for Madrid golf, consolidating its position as one of the national powers in the men's absolute category. The team has demonstrated great depth in its roster and the ability to react in decisive moments.
