The Royal Golf Federation of Madrid has registered 100,593 licenses, surpassing the barrier of one hundred thousand registered players for the first time. A 12-year-old, Nicolás Merino, became the 100,000th registered player.
The Community of Madrid has reached a historic milestone in the world of golf. The Royal Golf Federation of Madrid (RFGM) has surpassed 100,000 registered players, with a total of 100,593 active licenses as of today. This achievement positions the region as a national benchmark in the practice of this sport.
Young Nicolás Merino, aged 12, has become the 100,000th registered player, a symbol of the generational shift taking place in Madrid golf. Along with his family, the Merino Quintana family, they regularly practice this sport at the RFGM School, where the values it imparts are highlighted.
Beatriz Quintana, Nicolás's mother, explains that golf has brought them closer as a family. “What we enjoy most is playing together as a family. Since we registered and obtained our handicap, we seize every opportunity to get out on the course,” she notes. She also emphasizes that the sport teaches how to manage frustration and patience, and allows them to step away from screens.
The evolution of licenses in Madrid has been spectacular over the last four decades. In 1986, there were barely 9,409 registered players, a figure that has multiplied by more than ten to surpass 100,000 in 2026. The period of greatest growth was recorded between 1996 and 2006, when the number of practitioners tripled, rising from 23,980 to 76,881.
After a consolidation phase between 2016 and 2018, with a peak of 97,236 licenses, the global economic crisis reduced the figure to 81,727. However, since the pandemic, there has been a continuous resurgence that has culminated in this historic record.
Beatriz Quintana encourages other families to take the plunge. “It may seem complicated to start, but in Madrid there are a large number of facilities like the RFGM School, where anyone can begin. There are excellent teachers, technology to learn, and a fantastic atmosphere,” she states.
Madrid golf thus consolidates itself as a sport with deep roots in the region, capable of uniting generations and imparting values. The RFGM expects to continue growing and expand its initiation programs to bring this sport closer to more citizens.
