The Community of Madrid is relocating the entire EducaMadrid platform to the regional data processing centre, an operation aimed at enhancing security and performance. The service will be inactive for a week and will be operational on August 13.
The Ministry of Digitalisation of the Community of Madrid has begun the transfer of all technological infrastructure of EducaMadrid to the Regional Data Processing Centre (CPD), a move that will unify the educational server with the rest of the regional systems. The operation, which is being carried out during school holidays, aims to move towards a more secure, stable, and efficient model.
The Digitalisation Minister, Miguel López-Valverde, explained that this action consolidates the government's commitment to high-capacity digital infrastructures. Currently, the region has 40 data centres in operation, with a total installed capacity of 260 megawatts, and there are 15 projects under construction or expansion that will add an additional 474 MW.
“This growth reinforces Madrid's position as one of the main technological hubs in Europe and as a strategic location for the development of the data economy, Artificial Intelligence, and advanced digital services,” López-Valverde stated.
The migration is a technically complex operation due to the volume of information, applications, and services integrated into EducaMadrid. To ensure its execution, preliminary work has been carried out on software updates, network reconfiguration, data replication, and equipment preparation, as well as coordinating contingency protocols.
The new location offers higher levels of certification, security, and energy efficiency. It will also facilitate coordinated management of communications, backups, and technological capacity while strengthening protection against cyberattacks and ensuring service continuity.
An investment of €3.9 million to modernise the platform
The relocation is part of the contract for modernising the educational platform, which is endowed with €3.9 million until July 2028. The unification of infrastructures will help avoid duplications in communications, backups, and technical management, with an estimated saving of around €650,000 annually for the regional administration.
To minimise the impact on centres, teachers, students, and families, the main phase of the relocation has been scheduled during school holidays, when the use of this system is significantly lower. The transfer and final relocation are expected to take a minimum of one week.
During this period, all services will remain temporarily inactive while the migration is completed, systems are verified, and necessary tests are conducted. The expectation is that the platform will be fully operational on August 13. The regional government has informed management bodies and the educational community in advance to facilitate planning.
EducaMadrid serves over a million accounts of teachers and students from publicly funded centres. It offers, among other tools, virtual classrooms, corporate email, cloud storage, audiovisual content, web spaces, and user management systems, under a model of technological sovereignty, data protection, and the use of free software.
With this migration, users of the Madrid educational platform will have a more robust service ready for future digital challenges. Educational centres have already been informed of the timelines and contingency measures to ensure that the return to the school year in September proceeds normally.
