The mayor of Getafe, Sara Hernández, has visited the works of Phase II of the San Isidro Sports Centre, where the grass for the Gregorio Serrano football pitch is already being installed.
The Getafe City Council has begun the installation of grass on the Gregorio Serrano football pitch, as part of the Phase II works of the San Isidro Sports Centre. Mayor Sara Hernández visited the site on Thursday, where the work is progressing well and has a municipal budget of nearly €8.5 million.
The new sports facility is being built on the site of the old sports centre, which, according to the local government, fell into disuse and was almost privatised by the previous PP government. Hernández highlighted that "we have gone from a disused sports centre that the previous PP government wanted to privatise, to an open space for the neighbourhood and for all of Getafe, with the most modern sports facility we currently have."
The project includes the construction of an 11-a-side football pitch with 12 changing rooms and toilets, four new activity rooms, offices for the Sports delegation, and an expansion of the surface parking with 50 additional spaces. In the upper tiers of the grandstand, which will have 150 seats, the aforementioned multifunctional rooms will be set up to diversify the sports offerings in the neighbourhood.
The project is completed with the integration of the sports centre with the San Isidro Park, through the installation of urban sports leisure elements. Last March, the first stone of the facility was laid in a ceremony attended by the honouree Gregorio Serrano, as well as family members and former players of Getafe C.F. who were part of the club's early successes.
This phase adds to the public indoor swimming pool, inaugurated in 2023, and turns the San Isidro Sports Centre into a reference sports complex for the southern area of the Community of Madrid. The works are fully financed by the municipal budget, without contributions from other administrations.
The mayor has emphasised that the new facility "directly helps to improve the quality of life in San Isidro" and has reiterated the government team's commitment to providing public facilities in the neighbourhoods. Phase II is expected to be operational in the coming months, once the grass, grandstand, and urbanisation works are completed.
The residents of Getafe will be able to enjoy a state-of-the-art football pitch, with modern changing rooms and an expanded parking area that will facilitate access. The Sports delegation will move to the new offices, thus centralising municipal sports management.
