The Secretary General of the Madrid socialists, Óscar López, will be the candidate for the Presidency of the Community of Madrid after gathering more than 4,000 endorsements from the membership, far exceeding the minimum required of 2,092.
The PSOE of Madrid now has a candidate for the 2027 regional elections. Óscar López was proclaimed this Thursday as the head of the list for the Madrid socialists after an internal endorsement process in which he obtained over 4,000 supports from the membership, doubling the minimum of 2,092 necessary to formalise his candidacy.
The other candidate, Silvia López Quivira, did not reach the required threshold, so the current Secretary General of PSOE-M will be the one to contest the regional government against President Isabel Díaz Ayuso in 2027. This designation marks the start of a new phase within the organisation, which is already looking towards the electoral date.
Alcorcón, a strategic stronghold for the socialists
The proclamation of Óscar López positions Alcorcón as one of the key municipalities in the PSOE's electoral strategy. The city, one of the most populated in the south of the region, will be a priority territory for mobilising votes and expanding citizen support. Party sources highlight that the municipality has traditionally been a socialist stronghold and that its demographic relevance makes it a fundamental stage for contesting the regional executive.
López has publicly thanked the support received and emphasised the value of each of the endorsements. “It is an honour to have the trust of the membership. Now we must work to build a real alternative for the Community of Madrid,” he stated in a statement. The leader has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthen the party's presence in the metropolitan south, where Alcorcón will play a leading role in the pre-campaign and the electoral campaign.
A strong endorsement from the membership
The endorsement process has been the most participative in recent years, according to sources from PSOE-M. The figure of over 4,000 supports comfortably surpasses the records of previous internal designations, which gives López a reinforced legitimacy for the electoral race. The other candidate, Silvia López Quivira, did not obtain the necessary endorsements, so her project did not progress.
With this support, the PSOE begins to design a strategy for 2027 in which Alcorcón will have a special prominence. The municipality, currently governed by the PSOE, will be one of the scenarios where the party will seek to expand its citizen support to contest the regional executive. The election of Óscar López thus represents the first step of a project that is already looking towards the next elections in the Community of Madrid.
The socialist candidate will face the challenge of mobilising the electorate in the southern region, where Ayuso's PP has made gains in recent years. The membership in Alcorcón, one of the most active in the party, will be key in that task. The local group has already shown its support for López and is preparing for an intense campaign.
With the proclamation of Óscar López, PSOE-M begins a new phase. The party is confident that its candidate, with experience in the central government and in the Senate, can regain the trust of Madrid voters and contest the PP's absolute majority. The electoral date of 2027 presents itself as a decisive scenario for the political future of the region.
