Madrid's PSOE holds municipal primaries this Sunday to choose its candidate for the mayoralty of the capital, with Reyes Maroto and Enma López as the only contenders and the party divided after weeks of accusations.

The polls open this Sunday in Madrid's PSOE to determine who will be the candidate for the mayoralty of Madrid in the 2027 elections. The municipal spokesperson and former minister Reyes Maroto and councillor Enma López face off in primaries that have highlighted the internal fracture of the party. Both have managed to gather the necessary endorsements: Maroto received 1,376 supports and López 1,028, a technical tie that leaves the outcome in the hands of the secret vote of the membership.

Two opposing projects for the City Council of Madrid

The internal campaign has been marked by cross-criticisms. Maroto has reproached López for presenting her candidacy "behind the back of the leadership" of the party and for appropriating her roadmap for the city. For her part, López argues that her project represents a "break" with the current standards of the PSOE and offers a "plus" to Maroto's candidacy. However, Thursday's debate took place in a calm tone, with both extending a hand to each other.

While at the regional level the party has already designated Óscar López as the candidate for the Presidency of the Community of Madrid and Mónica García for the same position, the mayoralty of the capital remains an open front. Ferraz supports Maroto, but the backing of the apparatus has not been enough to dissuade López, who has managed to mobilise a critical sector of the membership.

The division of Madrid's PSOE, in numbers

The endorsements reflect a party split into two almost equal halves. Maroto, former Minister of Industry, has the backing of the federal leadership and a good part of the old guard of Madrid socialism. López, a councillor in the City Council since 2019, represents a sector that demands renewal and more autonomy from Ferraz. 1,376 against 1,028: the difference is just 348 endorsements, a margin that does not guarantee a clear victory.

The voting day takes place in local branches across the capital, and the results will be known throughout the afternoon. High participation is expected, given the interest the process has generated among the members. For Madrid's PSOE, the outcome will define not only the candidacy but also the tone of the opposition to the government of José Luis Martínez-Almeida in the last year of the legislature.

Meanwhile, the residents of Madrid are witnessing an internal struggle that could condition the electoral offer of the left in the capital. Whoever wins this Sunday will have just over a year to build a project that can challenge the PP for the mayoralty. The upcoming elections, both in the primaries and in the municipal elections of 2027, promise strong emotions.
