An electrical failure at Atocha and another on the line between Colmenar and Tres Cantos have caused delays, stoppages, and diversions on lines C-3, C-4, and C-5 since early this Friday. Users are reporting overcrowding and a lack of information.
Cercanías Madrid travellers have endured another hellish morning this Friday. Two simultaneous breakdowns on the network, one at Atocha station and another between Colmenar and Tres Cantos, have caused delays, stoppages, and route changes on lines C-3, C-4, and C-5 since 6:32 AM, just as thousands of people were heading to work.
Electrical Failure at Atocha and Line Cut to Tres Cantos
The first incident, reported by Adif, was due to a lack of electrical supply during work at Atocha Cercanías station. This affected circulation on the three lines, with delays and stoppages that lasted throughout the morning. Just an hour later, a second breakdown in the infrastructure between Colmenar and Tres Cantos forced the suspension of circulation on that stretch, meaning trains on line C-4 start and end their journey at Tres Cantos.
The coincidence with the start of scheduled works on these lines has worsened the situation. Users have bitterly complained on social media, sharing images of overcrowded platforms and trains that did not arrive. One user, Sonia, wrote on X: “Another day being an absolute disgrace. Not a single train passed in Parla since 5, many of us need to go to work and people are desperate… pathetic.”
Overcrowding and Lack of Information
At Parla station, the accumulation of travellers was such that the platform was completely full, according to videos shared. Another user reported that the escalators and information panels were not working, with a temperature of around 35 degrees: “Trains aren’t coming, there are so many people on the platform… I’m fed up with Adif, Renfe, Cercanías, and everything.”
This is not the first serious incident this week. On Wednesday, similar problems were recorded due to a breakdown at Atocha, leading travellers to wonder if the network is at the limit of its capacity. Renfe has stated that technicians are working to restore normality, but without providing specific timelines.
Consequences for the Traveller
For residents of the Community of Madrid, especially those using lines C-3, C-4, and C-5, the day has turned into a nightmare. Many have opted for cars or buses, increasing traffic on the roads leading to the capital. The situation is particularly critical for those living in municipalities like Parla, Getafe, or Tres Cantos, where the train is the main means of transport.
In the absence of alternatives, users' patience is wearing thin. Complaints focus on the lack of foresight and real-time information. Meanwhile, Renfe and Adif have emergency teams active to resolve the breakdowns. Travellers are advised to check the status of the lines before leaving home and to expect longer waiting times than usual.
