The Socialist Municipal Group of Colmenar Viejo has voted against granting the works licence for the biogas plant projected in the municipality during the last Urban Planning Informative Commission.
The Socialist Municipal Group of Colmenar Viejo has formalised its opposition to the biogas plant project by voting against the works licence in the last Urban Planning Informative Commission. The party thus conveys an institutional stance that it has maintained since the beginning of the processing of the installation.
The socialists believe that the plant, intended to process 75,000 tonnes of organic waste annually, would have a significant impact on the residents of Colmenar Viejo and the neighbouring municipality of Tres Cantos. The local PSOE Secretary General, Paloma Maroñas, has described the project as "excessive" and reiterated the call to halt its development, in addition to demanding greater transparency throughout the process.
The PSOE argues that the information provided so far has been insufficient for citizens to assess the real scope of the installation. They question the advisability of promoting this private initiative, as the future environmental complex of the Northwest Consortium will have public facilities aimed at processing organic matter. In their view, this makes a similar infrastructure promoted by private companies unnecessary.
However, the PSOE of Colmenar Viejo emphasises that their rejection does not imply opposition to biogas production as a source of renewable energy. They remind that the Spanish Government approved the Biogas Roadmap in 2022, aimed at promoting this technology within the energy transition. Nevertheless, they believe that the development of such facilities should be carried out under criteria of transparency, social consensus, territorial planning, and proportionality, conditions that, in their opinion, the project planned for Colmenar Viejo does not meet.
The biogas plant has generated intense debate in the municipality, where residents and environmental groups have also expressed their concerns about the potential environmental and health effects. The final decision on the works licence corresponds to the Colmenar Viejo City Council, which will have to make a pronouncement in upcoming plenary sessions. Meanwhile, the PSOE will continue to demand the halting of the project and greater citizen participation in the process.
