The festivals of San Cayetano, San Lorenzo, and the Virgen de la Paloma will fill the Centro district with free concerts, chotis, and processions from August 4 to 16.
The Centro district of Madrid is preparing for two weeks of continuous festivities. From August 4 to 16, the neighbourhoods of Embajadores, Lavapiés, and La Latina will host the traditional verbenas of San Cayetano, San Lorenzo, and the Virgen de la Paloma, three consecutive celebrations that turn the streets into a stage for chotis, lemonade, and processions.
The Madrid City Council presented a programme on Thursday that combines live music with the most deeply rooted proposals of local folklore. DePol, Celtas Cortos, Miss Cafeina, and Modestia Aparte lead a lineup of free concerts that will take place at various points in the district, with performances also from artists such as Soleá Morente, Raya Real, Los Vinagres, Karavana, Jarana, or Metrolé.
The festivities will kick off with San Cayetano, from August 4 to 7, with one of its main stages located in the plaza del General Vara de Rey. There, there will be exhibitions of giants and big-heads, workshops, popular chotis classes, and the traditional procession of the saint, along with a programme of children's activities that will include magic and puppet shows.
The community spirit remains one of the key aspects of the celebration. Residents of Calle del Oso will once again distribute free lemonade for four days, while the La Corrala Residents' Association will organise a family-friendly popular bull run. The 'Historia de Lavapiés' project will bring a popular snack to the plaza de Cascorro for all attendees.
One of the most anticipated moments of this first round will be the concert by Soleá Morente in Embajadores, the neighbourhood where the artist was born and raised, a recital with significant symbolic value. Alongside her, Raya Real, Jarana, or Montoya & Carmona, among others, will take to the stages.
The baton will be taken up by San Lorenzo, from August 8 to 11, with the plaza de Arturo Barea as the operations centre. The neighbourhood will host concerts, children's shows, a water battle, games, and workshops, as well as a new edition of the Concurso de Chotis Virgen de la Paloma, an unmissable event for lovers of traditional dance.
The grand finale will arrive with the festivities of the Virgen de la Paloma, from August 13 to 16, which will once again concentrate most of the programme in the gardens of Las Vistillas and the plaza de la Paja. There, Celtas Cortos, Miss Cafeina, and Modestia Aparte will perform, closing the cycle with a mix of sounds ranging from folk to electronic.
Religious events will maintain their prominence during these dates. There will be masses, floral offerings, and processions, including the traditional descent of the Virgin of the Paloma's painting by firefighters, a sight that draws thousands of people to the city centre each year.
The opening speech of the festivities will be given by representatives of SAMUR-Protection Civil, recognising the work carried out by their professionals and volunteers throughout the year, especially during the summer nights with the highest activity in the city.
For the residents of the Centro district, these verbenas represent an opportunity to reclaim public space with free activities for all audiences. The streets will be decorated, the street organs will play again, and the chulapos and chulapas will become the main characters of a festive calendar that has been repeated every summer for decades.
