The festive calendar of Madrid is preparing for its most traditional event of the year. The August verbenas will once again transform the Centro district into an open-air stage where tradition, music, and gastronomy come together for nearly two weeks. From August 5 to 17, three consecutive celebrations will fill the neighborhoods of Embajadores, Lavapiés, and La Latina with atmosphere.
The first to kick off will be San Cayetano, from August 5 to 8, in the area of Embajadores and El Rastro. This will be followed by San Lorenzo, from August 9 to 12, in Lavapiés. The grand finale will be the Virgen de la Paloma, from August 14 to 17, featuring the largest verbena of all, from La Latina.
These festivities, which are part of the capital's DNA, keep alive a tradition that dates back centuries. Balconies are adorned with Manila shawls, the streets are filled with lanterns, and locals don their finest attire to dance to the tunes of the organillos.
San Cayetano, the Opening in Embajadores
The San Cayetano Fiestas will kick off on August 5. The neighborhood of Embajadores, with Plaza General Vara del Rey, Plaza de Cascorro, Ribera de Curtidores, and the street Embajadores itself as venues, will host free concerts, musical performances, family shows, workshops, and children's activities.
The programme combines proposals from the City Council with those from local associations and merchants, who get involved in the organization each year. The traditional atmosphere can be felt in every corner: locals dress in traditional attire, and the streets become a postcard of old Madrid.
The church of San Cayetano, located on Embajadores street, remains a meeting point for locals and visitors. The religious tradition, which honours the patron saint of bread and work, coexists with the festive character of celebrations that have managed to endure from generation to generation.
San Lorenzo, the Multicultural Verbena of Lavapiés
As soon as San Cayetano ends, the baton passes to Lavapiés. From August 9 to 12, the San Lorenzo Fiestas take to the streets of this neighborhood with its own unique personality, marked by its multicultural character. The blend of traditional and diverse elements makes Lavapiés one of the most unique settings of Madrid's summer.
The programme includes music, children's activities, popular contests, workshops, parades, and performances for all ages. Locals, merchants, and associations once again take centre stage in a celebration with a strong participatory spirit.

The Fiestas of the Virgen de la Paloma, from August 14 to 17, are the most anticipated event of Madrid's summer. La Latina regains its traditional essence in places like Las Vistillas, Plaza de la Paja, Plaza de la Cebada, and Calle de la Paloma, where a programme combines concerts, shows, popular dances, children's activities, giants and cabezudos, and chotis contests.
The most emotional moment comes on August 15, with the procession of the Virgen de la Paloma, which gathers thousands of people each year. This tradition, which dates back to the 18th century, began when a local resident found an image of the Virgin in a nearby lot on Calle de la Paloma. Since then, popular devotion has continued to grow.
The verbena stalls will offer the most typical products, such as lemonade, rosquillas, and other sweets, completing an experience where gastronomy plays a prominent role. Gastronomy thus becomes another attraction of the festivities that draw both locals and tourists.
One Spirit, Three Neighborhoods
Despite their differences, the three verbenas share the same spirit. Embajadores, Lavapiés, and La Latina are neighborhoods connected by narrow streets, 19th-century buildings, historic corralas, and squares that transform into open-air living rooms for a few days.
