The City Council of Madrid is building a monolithic 10-metre fountain in Plaza de la América Española, which will be the second tallest in the capital. The project is set to be completed in autumn 2026 and will serve as the entrance to the future Parque Ventas.
The Salamanca district will have a new urban landmark before the end of the year. The City Council of Madrid has begun the foundation works for a monumental fountain in Plaza de la América Española, a 10-metre tall water monolith that will surpass the iconic fountains of Cibeles and Neptune in size. The structure, designed as an entrance to the future Parque Ventas, is expected to be operational next autumn, according to the schedule from the Area of Works and Equipment.
The fountain will rise as the second tallest in the city, only behind the fountain in Parque del Oeste, which reaches nearly 21 metres. With its 10 metres, the new feature aims to become a visual reference at the confluence of Alejandro González, Sancho Dávila, Almería, and Marqués de Mondéjar streets, a quiet area bordering the heavy traffic of the M-30.
The design breaks away from classical stone standards and opts for a contemporary megalithic aesthetic. The fountain will consist of three curved walls of reinforced concrete, with heights ranging from 7 to 10 metres. Above them, a continuous hydraulic system will generate sheets, vertical waterfalls, and jets of water that will fall into a circular pond of about seven metres in diameter. According to municipal sources, the curved shapes capture the spirit of the circular geometry that underpins the entire Parque Ventas project.
The water will not only have aesthetic value. The City Council anticipates that the constant murmur will act as an acoustic barrier against traffic noise, while the liquid curtains will help cool the environment during the hottest months. At night, technical lighting will project luminous silhouettes onto the concrete. The surroundings will be completed with landscaped flowerbeds and granite benches facing the pond, creating a resting space for residents.
This initiative is part of the Parque Ventas macroproject, one of the largest investments of the legislature, with a budget of 70.4 million euros. The initiative aims to cover a stretch of the M-30 with a green platform of 16,370 square metres and 197 metres in length, connecting the Quinta de la Fuente del Berro with Ciudad Lineal. The park will include eight walkways, 1,060 new trees, over 48,800 shrubs, meadows, children's areas, and calisthenics zones. The fountain, in Plaza de la América Española, will be the grand entrance to this new green lung.
The construction of the fountain is progressing well, and it is expected to be finished in autumn 2026, well ahead of the full inauguration of the park, planned for spring 2027. The area renovation will also adapt the pedestrian accesses from Ramón de Aguinaga street and refurbish the nearby Antonio Pirala park to connect both districts.
For residents of the Salamanca district and surrounding areas, the fountain will provide a new meeting point and thermal relief in summer. Furthermore, the improved pedestrian connection will facilitate transit between neighbourhoods currently separated by the M-30. The City Council hopes that the monument will become an icon of the city, comparable to Cibeles and Neptune, but with a 21st-century architectural language.
