The fire in the western Sierra of Madrid has surrounded the NASA antennas in Robledo de Chavela and the ESA in Cebreros, without causing damage.

The fire that has ravaged part of the western Sierra of Madrid has threatened the Deep Space Communications Complex in Robledo de Chavela and the ESA station in Cebreros. Initial inspections confirm that the antennas and buildings are intact.

The flames that have devoured hundreds of hectares in the western Sierra of Madrid over the past few days surrounded two of the world's most important scientific facilities: the Deep Space Communications Complex in Madrid, managed by NASA and INTA in Robledo de Chavela, and the European Space Agency (ESA) tracking station in Cebreros (Ávila). After the tension of the last few hours, initial assessments confirm that neither has suffered significant structural damage.

In the case of the Robledo de Chavela complex, the fire mainly affected the pavement and surrounding vegetation, but the huge parabolic antennas and technical buildings remain intact. In Cebreros, the situation was even more favourable: the flames did not penetrate the premises, and communications were never interrupted. The good news comes after several days of maximum alert, during which NASA evacuated nearly a hundred workers on Friday due to the proximity of the fire.

Emergency services deployed a large operation to protect infrastructure considered strategic. For several hours, the gigantic antennas were exposed to the advance of the flames and adverse weather conditions, with strong gusts of wind making it difficult to control the fire. The situation became critical, but the operation managed to contain the fire before it reached the equipment.

The Deep Space Network (DSN) is designed to withstand emergencies. While access to the Madrid station remained restricted for safety, NASA automatically transferred the tracking of its missions to sister stations in Goldstone (California) and Canberra (Australia). This backup system allowed communications with spacecraft to continue without interruption, a crucial aspect when managing probes located millions of kilometres from Earth.

The Robledo de Chavela complex is part of the Deep Space Network, a global network consisting of only three major stations strategically distributed around the planet to ensure permanent contact with space missions. From Madrid, communications are maintained with numerous scientific probes and some of the most ambitious projects for exploring the Solar System. A prolonged interruption would have forced a massive workload to be redistributed among the other two stations in the network for weeks.

The ESA station in Cebreros also plays a similarly relevant role. From its antennas, missions such as Mars Express, which continues to study Mars two decades after its launch; BepiColombo, en route to Mercury; Solar Orbiter, tasked with investigating the Sun; Juice, heading to Jupiter's icy moons; Hera, the European planetary defence mission; or the Euclid telescope, aimed at deepening the study of dark matter and energy, are followed. The continuity of all of them depended, to a large extent, on the infrastructure withstanding the advance of the fire.

This episode also highlights the close international cooperation behind space exploration. NASA expressly thanked the work carried out by Spanish emergency services, as well as the ministries of Defence, Interior, and Science, whose actions helped protect facilities that not only belong to Spain's scientific heritage but are also part of a critical network for international research. The ESA issued a similar message, acknowledging the efforts of teams who worked under extremely difficult conditions to prevent the fire from reaching the Cebreros station.

Despite the initial relief, the situation still requires caution. Authorities continue to conduct inspections as safety conditions allow, and access to certain areas remains restricted. NASA itself has emphasised that assessments will continue over the coming days to rule out any hidden damage that could affect the future operability of the complex.

Beyond the immediate assessment, the fire leaves an inevitable reflection on the vulnerability of scientific infrastructures that, although distant from the media spotlight, play an essential role in space research. In an era marked by the increase of extreme phenomena and large wildfires, protecting such facilities becomes a matter that transcends the local sphere and acquires a whole international dimension.
