The Madrid City Council has given the green light to the project for the municipal music school in Puente de Vallecas, a historic demand from residents. The investment amounts to €5.2 million and the building will be located on Javier de Miguel Street.

The Madrid City Council has approved the construction of a municipal music school in the Puente de Vallecas district, a long-awaited project by the residents. The planned investment is €5.2 million and the building will rise at the confluence of Javier de Miguel and Martínez de la Riva streets.

The initiative was announced by the mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, during the last State of the City Debate. Now, the Department of Works and Equipment has given the project the green light, which responds to a historic demand from the area's residents.

A building of 2,163 square meters with multiple spaces

The future building will have a total constructed area of 2,163 square meters, distributed over the ground floor, first, second, and semi-basement. It will feature a lobby with an information desk, an auditorium with seating and stage, classrooms and study booths, an administrative area, changing rooms, restrooms, storage rooms, and utility rooms.

The design will ensure universal accessibility, so that all facilities can be used by people with reduced mobility.

Part of the Southern Strategy and an unprecedented equipment plan

This new facility is part of the Southern Strategy, a municipal plan aimed at promoting urban, economic, and environmental transformation in nine districts of the south and east of the capital: Latina, Carabanchel, Usera, Villaverde, Puente de Vallecas, Villa de Vallecas, Moratalaz, Vicálvaro, and San Blas-Canillejas.

According to the City Council, since 2019, more than €580 million has been invested in new municipal facilities, with 107 new provisions: 87 already completed and 20 under construction. These include nursery schools, senior centres, sports complexes, cultural centres, libraries, and social service centres, distributed across the 21 districts.

For the residents of Puente de Vallecas, the music school represents a cultural and educational resource that did not previously exist in the district. The classes and activities offered will allow children and adults to train in musical disciplines without having to travel to other areas.

The project is currently in the approval phase and the works will soon be put out to tender. The City Council has not yet specified the start date for the works or the estimated execution period, but the expectation is that the school will be able to open its doors in the coming years.
