Mayor Alejandro Navarro Prieto supervises the works in Fronteras, Cobos, Ronda Norte, La Caja del Arte and Plaza Centro. 355 new LED lights have been installed and the urban regeneration of Cobos is nearing completion.
The Torrejón de Ardoz City Council has launched a package of five initiatives across different neighbourhoods to enhance the quality of life for residents. The mayor, Alejandro Navarro Prieto, has personally visited the works to check on their progress. The improvements range from the renewal of street lighting to the creation of a large mural, as well as the climate control of the city's most important cultural centre.
355 New LED Lights in the Fronteras Neighbourhood
In the Fronteras neighbourhood, the most visible change is the lighting. 355 lights have been replaced on San Fernando, Manuel Sandoval, Torrejón and Alcorcón streets, as well as in the interior areas. Torrejón was a pioneer in Spain by installing LED lighting in 2012, but wear and tear has necessitated the renewal of the equipment. The new lamps triple the light levels on some streets without increasing consumption or glare.
Additionally, 99 lighting supports have been replaced with more modern ones. The porticos now feature 8,512 metres of continuous LED strip, which has completely transformed these thoroughfares. Residents are already noticing the difference when walking at night.
Urban Regeneration in Cobos: Wider Pavements and More Trees
The Cobos neighbourhood is the third traditional area of Torrejón to benefit from an urban regeneration project. The works, which affect Cuenca, Segovia, Ávila, Hortensias, Zamora, Valladolid, Palencia, Nardos, Rosas and Margaritas streets, are in their final stages. The reform is not just aesthetic: priority has been given to pedestrians, widening the pavements to facilitate mobility for the elderly and removing architectural barriers. Lighting has also been improved and trees have been planted to enhance environmental quality.
The mayor has walked through the streets to talk with residents and check the pace of the work. "This is a neighbourhood with a large elderly population, and these wider pavements are going to change their lives," he noted during the visit.
A 120-Metre Mural on Ronda Norte
Torrejón adds a new artistic attraction to its urban landscape. It is a large mural, almost 120 metres long, located on Ronda Norte, between Curas and Pedro Rodríguez de Campomanes streets. The work, titled “North Pole”, has been created by over 22 artists, including several from Torrejón. With this, there are now 91 murals decorating the streets of the city, a hallmark of the municipality.
The mural has been very well received by residents, who see it as a way to beautify the surroundings and promote quality urban art. The initiative is part of the City Council's commitment to street culture.
Efficient Climate Control at La Caja del Arte
The La Caja del Arte Performing Arts Centre has completely renewed its climate control system. 83 high-efficiency VRV units have been installed in a total of 54 classrooms, replacing the old units that suffered from recurring breakdowns. The new system consumes less energy, resulting in savings for municipal funds and improved comfort for users.
The centre hosts hundreds of students daily in artistic disciplines, from dance to theatre, making this upgrade highly anticipated. "Now we can work in optimal conditions all year round," the centre's management explains.
Plaza Centro to be Illuminated and Painted
The last of the announced improvements affects Plaza Centro, one of the busiest areas in Torrejón. Work is expected to begin in the coming weeks to replace the embedded light points with 65 metres of continuous LED strip with recessed metal profiling. Additionally, the entire square will be painted to restore its best appearance.
"We want every corner of Torrejón to shine as it deserves. These five initiatives are just the beginning of a more ambitious plan to improve our neighbourhoods," declared Mayor Alejandro Navarro Prieto.
Residents of Plaza Centro had been calling for a renovation, especially of the lighting, which had become outdated. With this intervention, the City Council hopes to give a new lease of life to one of the most emblematic areas of the urban centre.
Overall, the five improvements represent a significant investment aimed at making Torrejón a more modern, accessible, and pleasant city for its more than 130,000 inhabitants. The works in Fronteras and Cobos are already well advanced, while those in Plaza Centro will begin shortly. Residents can now enjoy the new mural and the upgraded climate control system at La Caja del Arte.
