The Plenary of Arganda del Rey approved this Friday the reversal of the plot on Cabo de Palos street, in La Poveda, which will pass to the Community of Madrid to build a care home for the elderly with a day centre, under the Plan 40/40.
The City Council of Arganda del Rey has taken a key step for the municipality to have a new public care home for the elderly, the first in five decades. The extraordinary session of the Municipal Plenary, held this Friday, was approved with votes in favour from the PP, Vox and the non-affiliated councillor — and against from the PSOE — for the reversal of the plot on Cabo de Palos street, in La Poveda, which until now belonged to the municipal company ESMAR.
The land is once again the property of the council, which will allow it to be ceded to the Community of Madrid to carry out the project. The future care home is part of the Plan 40/40, a regional initiative that aims to build 40 care homes and 40 day centres for the elderly throughout the Community of Madrid, with a total investment of 500 million euros.
A long-demanded social facility
The mayor of Arganda, Alberto Escribano, emphasised the importance of this progress: “Arganda will have a new care home for the elderly despite those who were here before putting up all possible obstacles. We are returning with great effort and dedication all the public and private investment lost over the last eight years.”
The new infrastructure will not only house a care home but will also include a Day Centre and specialised units for people with Alzheimer’s, mental health issues, chronic illnesses, and severe behavioural disorders. Additionally, it will have living units for parents and children with special needs.
For the residents of Arganda, especially families looking for public places for their elderly, this news is a relief after decades without a public offering of this kind in the municipality. Until now, those needing a care home had to turn to private centres or travel to other towns.
The steps ahead
With the reversal approved, the next step will be the formal cession of the plot to the Community of Madrid, which will be responsible for the tendering and construction of the centre. Although the Plenary did not set specific deadlines, the Plan 40/40 establishes a progressive execution horizon in the coming years.
The plot, located in La Poveda, one of the districts of Arganda, has a strategic location, close to residential areas and with good access. The project, according to municipal sources, responds to a historical demand from the population, which has seen itself age without adequate public infrastructure.
From the opposition, the PSOE justified its vote against citing lack of transparency in the processing and doubts about the viability of the project, although it has not presented alternatives. For its part, the governing team is confident that the care home will be operational within a reasonable timeframe, once the administrative procedures are completed.
Meanwhile, residents can check the status of the files and upcoming informational meetings on the municipal website. The City Council has announced that it will keep open channels of communication to detail the progress of the project, which will involve a multi-million euro investment and job creation during the construction phase and subsequent management.
