The Arganda del Rey City Council must restart the contracting process to repair the retaining wall of CEIP Federico García Lorca, as the tender has been deserted. The works, valued at nearly 48,000 euros, aim to prevent a possible collapse onto the parking area.

The Arganda del Rey Council has encountered an unexpected setback in its plan to ensure the safety of CEIP Federico García Lorca. The tender for the minor contract to repair the retaining wall of the centre, at risk of collapse, has been deserted as no bids were received from construction companies. The project, with a base budget of €47,924.01 (VAT included), is considered urgent by municipal technicians.

A wall that threatens to fall

The wall in question separates the school from Avenida del Niño Jesús and, according to the technical report of the project, is "deteriorated and leaning towards the parking area." This situation poses a "risk of collapse" for both the school premises and the surrounding areas, which has led the City Council to prioritise its repair. The project includes the complete demolition of the current wall and the construction of a new reinforced concrete structure, with waterproofing and drainage systems to prevent future leaks.

The works include the dismantling of the existing fencing, excavation and foundation of the new structure, resurfacing of the pavement on the sidewalk, and management of the generated waste. The planned execution period was one and a half months from the signing of the contract, a time that will now be extended due to the need to restart the contracting process.

Why did no companies submit bids?

The City Council has not provided details on the possible reasons for the lack of interest from companies. However, the Council indicates that it will consider whether it is necessary to modify the contract conditions to make it more attractive. "We will assess whether the budget, the timeline, or the technical characteristics may have influenced," municipal sources explain.

"The safety of the school environment is our priority, and we will seek a way for the works to be carried out as soon as possible," they add.

Meanwhile, the wall will continue to be under technical monitoring to avoid any risks arising from its state of conservation. Local residents and the educational community of CEIP Federico García Lorca hope that the new process will be more successful, as the risk of collapse does not disappear with the lack of bids.

A recurring problem in schools in the region

This is not the first time an educational centre in the Community of Madrid has faced infrastructure problems. In recent years, several schools have had to partially close or relocate classrooms due to damage to their facilities. In this case, the action focuses on a retaining wall that, if not repaired, could cause greater damage. The Arganda del Rey City Council has assured that no effort will be spared to find a company to undertake the work, although it has not specified a new date for the tender.

For the parents and students of García Lorca, the uncertainty adds to the usual concern about the state of public centres. "We hope it doesn't take long, because the wall is in very bad condition and it's scary to pass by there," comments a mother as she leaves the school. The Council reminds that, until the works are carried out, periodic monitoring will be maintained to ensure safety.
