An 18-year-old Spanish man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide after stabbing a 20-year-old Italian in Puerta del Sol during the celebrations for Argentina's victory in the World Cup.
The early hours of this Wednesday turned violent in the heart of Madrid. An 18-year-old Spanish man was arrested by the National Police as the alleged perpetrator of an attempted homicide after stabbing a 20-year-old Italian tourist in Puerta del Sol. The incident occurred around 5:30 AM, when hundreds of Argentine fans were celebrating their team's advance to the World Cup final.
According to police sources, the victim was found by officers with wounds to his neck and arm, receiving on-site assistance from a police officer with medical knowledge until the arrival of Samur-Civil Protection. The young Italian was taken to hospital in potentially serious condition, although his life is not in danger.
Arrest of the Attacker and Discovery of the Weapon
Witnesses pointed out another young man who had a cut on his hand and had been seen leaving the square. After being treated by medical services and discharged at the scene, officers identified him as the alleged attacker. The Police arrested him and, during the investigation, located the knife used in the attack in a shelter at the Sevilla Metro station, very close to the scene of the incident.
The arrested individual, a Spanish national, has been placed at the disposal of the judiciary as the presumed responsible for an attempted homicide. The investigation continues to clarify the details of the fight, which apparently originated from a dispute between groups of fans.
An Argentine Fan Arrested for Assaulting a Police Officer
In a separate incident, but also during the celebrations, a 35-year-old Argentine woman was arrested for assaulting an officer after attacking a member of the Prevention and Reaction Unit (UPR) in Isabel II square, in front of the Royal Theatre. The events occurred around 3:15 AM, when a group of fans began to disrupt the order by hitting trash containers and insulting the officers.
In response to their refusal to disperse and their defiant attitude, the Police intervened to break up the crowd. At that moment, the woman lunged at an officer, scratching her arms and causing a bruise. She was immediately arrested and placed at the disposal of the judiciary.
Both incidents have put authorities on alert, who are reinforcing security measures ahead of the potential celebration of the World Cup final. The National Police remind that celebrations should take place without disturbing public order or jeopardising the safety of citizens.
For the residents of Madrid, these incidents serve as a reminder of the need to maintain coexistence in public spaces, especially during large events. Authorities recommend avoiding areas of high concentration during nighttime hours and reporting any violent behaviour.
