The Community of Madrid will allocate €6.8 million to manage 179 public places for people with severe mental illness in Getafe. The contract, approved this week by the Governing Council, represents a 22.6% increase compared to the previous one.

Getafe strengthens its mental health care network. The Governing Council of the Community of Madrid has authorised a contract of €6.8 million to manage 179 public places intended for people with severe and enduring mental illness in various care resources in the municipality. The agreement, which will last for three years, improves the financial allocation by 22.6% compared to the previous award.

Distribution of places and care profiles

Of the 179 places, 26 are for residential care, which provide accommodation, meals, and supervision 24 hours a day. Another eight places are located in two supervised apartments, designed for individuals with greater autonomy but without family support. The bulk of the investment is concentrated on 90 places in a psychosocial rehabilitation centre, where follow-up and social integration programmes are developed. The remaining 55 places correspond to a vocational rehabilitation service, which offers personalised pathways to improve users' employability.

Improvement of professionals' working conditions

The 22.6% budget increase not only expands care capacity but also improves the working conditions of professionals. According to the Community of Madrid, the increase will allow salaries to be adjusted to the latest collective agreement in the disability care sector. This gesture aims to attract and retain talent in a field where demand is growing and turnover is high.

Regional network of over 7,000 places

Getafe thus joins an autonomous network that already has more than 7,000 specialised public places for severe mental illness, distributed across 233 centres and services. These include psychosocial rehabilitation services, day centres, and 36 community social support teams that provide home care. For the residents of Getafe, this means a closer and more specialised resource, avoiding travel to other towns.

“The aim is to provide comprehensive and quality care, promoting the social and labour integration of people with severe mental disorders,” regional government sources state.

The contract, which will be executed over the next three years, is expected to commence in the coming months, once the award is formalised. Users and their families will be able to access these resources through municipal social services or the mental health teams of the corresponding health area.
