The company La Jalea Teatro, winner of three awards in Oropesa, will perform 'La Trova por Madrid' at the History and San Isidro museums as part of the 'Classics to Refuge' programme by the City Council.
This summer, the climate refuge becomes a stage in Madrid. The company La Jalea Teatro, which has just won three awards at the International Street Theatre Festival in Oropesa (Toledo), will bring its show “La Trova por Madrid” to two museums in the capital as part of the municipal programme “Classics to Refuge”, an initiative of Veranos de la Villa aimed at providing culture to locals and tourists during the hottest months.
Free performances at the History Museum and the San Isidro Museum
The performances, with free admission until full capacity is reached, will take place over three days: on Thursday 23rd July at the History Museum of Madrid (Fuencarral street, 78), with two shows at 17:15 and 18:00; on Wednesday 5th August at the San Isidro Museum (San Andrés square, 2), also with two shows; and on Tuesday 11th August again at the History Museum, same times. Each performance lasts a short time, designed so that visitors can enjoy the theatre while cooling off.
The show, a shortened version of “La Trova de Buena Saña”, transports the audience to Madrid in 1621, when the closure of the comedy courtyards due to the death of Philip III forces three young actors to secretly perform popular romances. With live music and humour, the company aims to surprise those who visit the museums in search of relief from the heat.
A commitment to classic verse from a youthful perspective
La Jalea Teatro, formed in 2025 by five young individuals, advocates for classic theatre that respects original forms — verse, metre, live music — without resorting to anachronisms. “We believe that the language of the Golden Age still moves people if interpreted with truth,” explains director Cayetana Oteyza. The company writes its own texts in contemporary verse and composes original music, reviving the spirit of the old companies of comedians.
The “Classics to Refuge” programme is one of the initiatives of Veranos de la Villa to make use of municipal spaces during the heatwave. The participating museums open their doors as climate refuges, and La Jalea's performance transforms the visit into an unexpected scenic experience. For the City Council, it is about “bringing cultural heritage closer to citizens in a playful and accessible format.”
Three awards that validate the company's talent
La Jalea Teatro arrives in Madrid after its success at the Toledo festival, where it won the Best Actor Award for Javier Madruga, the Best Actress Award for Elena Trujillo, and the Second Prize for Best Show. The original play, “La Trova de Buena Saña”, is the basis for this shortened version now being presented in the museums. The artistic team includes Kai Massieu as performer, Alexis Becker in dramaturgy, and Cayetana Oteyza in direction.
For Madrileños, the opportunity to see this young company in such a unique setting as a museum is an added incentive to escape the heat without giving up culture. Admission is free, but capacity is limited, so it is recommended to arrive early. The performances last approximately 30 minutes each, and attendees can explore the museum's rooms before or after the show.
With this initiative, the City Council of Madrid demonstrates that classic theatre can also be a refreshing and surprising summer plan. Who knows, perhaps when leaving the museum, some audience member will be inspired to recite a romance on the way home.
