The Spanish football team is already on the move through the streets of Madrid. After landing at Barajas and receiving a welcome at the Royal Palace and Moncloa, the world champions have begun a massive caravan that will end at the iconic Cibeles Square, home to the city council of the capital.
A route from north to south through the centre of Madrid
The itinerary, confirmed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), started at the Moncloa Palace and continues along Princesa, Alberto Aguilera, Carranza, Sagasta, Génova (in the opposite direction), Goya, Serrano, Plaza de la Independencia, Puerta de Alcalá, Alfonso XII, and Montalbán. The parade, which runs through various streets in the Centro and Salamanca districts, has caused traffic disruptions and crowds of fans on sidewalks and curbs.
The convertible bus, adorned with the World Cup trophy, moves slowly amidst the fervour of supporters. The players, dressed in commemorative shirts —although some like Ferran Torres and Marcos Llorente have chosen to go without— greet fans and chant songs. The atmosphere is festive and the turnout is massive.
Final celebration at Cibeles with concerts and surprises
The central event of the celebration will take place next to the Palace of Communications, in Cibeles Square, starting at 21:00. There, the footballers will be introduced, followed by musical performances from groups such as Arde Bogotá, Viva Suecia, and singers Ana Mena, Lola Índigo, and Aitana. The RFEF has promised two hours of festivities and numerous surprises.
For the residents of Madrid, this event marks a historic end to the day: the capital is hosting a football world title for the second time, following the one in 2010 in South Africa. Predictions indicate that the Cibeles area and the Paseo de Recoletos will be filled with thousands of people. The city council has arranged a special security and cleaning operation for the occasion.
The team arrived in Madrid early in the afternoon. Rodri Hernández, the captain, was the first to disembark from the plane with the trophy, followed by coach Luis de la Fuente and RFEF president Rafael Louzán. After a brief rest at a hotel, the delegation went to La Zarzuela to be received by the Royal Household, and then to Moncloa for a meeting with the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez.
Fans who cannot make it to the centre can follow the caravan and the celebrations through giant screens set up at various points in the city, such as Sol Square or Retiro Park. For those who prefer to watch from home, the live broadcast will be provided by RTVE and various digital platforms.
“It is a pride to see the team celebrating with the people. Madrid is the capital of world football today,” declared a spokesperson for the City Council.
The parade is expected to conclude around 21:00, giving way to the festivities. Attendees should note that access to Cibeles Square will be controlled and it is recommended to arrive early. Public transport —metro and EMT buses— will enhance their service until midnight.
