Reyes Maroto and Enma López cast their votes in the primaries that will choose the socialist candidate for the mayoralty of the capital for the 2027 municipal elections. Both have made a call to party members: to come out and vote to strengthen the party and take Cibeles from the PP.
Maroto, the current spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the City Council, voted in the Madrid Centro Group. "
Today is a very important day for the PSOE of the city of Madrid because we are going to freely choose the candidacy for the 2027 mayoralty with the sole objective of winning the elections," she stated. Her project is based, she said, on "teamwork" and on "a project with roots" woven over the last three and a half years with the groups and the membership.
The surprise of Enma López
For her part, Enma López, until now the deputy spokesperson for the municipal group, has been the surprise of these primaries by presenting her candidacy. After voting, she expressed being "very proud" of the campaign work, which has returned "enthusiasm" to many members. López assured that if elected, she would have Maroto on her team: "
They are colleagues, people I care about, whom I respect and admire, so from tomorrow, all together," she affirmed.
The electoral day is taking place in 21 groups and 22 community centres spread throughout the capital. The result will be known at 19:30, when the secretary general of PSOE-M, Óscar López, will announce the winning candidate. This event is crucial for the future of the party in Madrid, which seeks to regain a City Council that has been governed by the PP since 1991 (except for the interlude of Manuela Carmena between 2015 and 2019).
A process that sets the course for 2027
This Sunday’s primaries not only decide who will head the socialist list but also define the party model that the Madrid PSOE wants. Maroto represents the continuity of organic work, while López has burst onto the scene with a message of renewal. Both have avoided direct attacks and focused their messages on the need for unity to defeat the current mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida.
For the Madrid voter, the outcome of these primaries will have a direct impact on the electoral offer for 2027. Whoever wins will need to articulate a credible alternative to the PP in a City Council where the left has not held a majority for years. The participation of the membership will be, according to the candidates, the first step to building that winning project.
The day is proceeding normally and without incidents. Polling stations will remain open until 20:00. The counting will be quick, and before nightfall, Madrid will know who the socialist candidate for the mayoralty is.
