The Plenary of the Alcalá de Henares City Council has unanimously approved an institutional declaration of support for the Venezuelan people, with a financial contribution of 6,000 euros.
The Alcalá de Henares City Council has stepped forward to help the victims of the earthquakes that shook Venezuela on June 24. In the ordinary plenary session held this Tuesday, all political groups supported an institutional declaration that includes a donation of 6,000 euros to alleviate the emergency.
Solidarity with Venezuelan neighbours
The approved declaration highlights that there are nearly 4,000 citizens of Venezuelan origin residing in Alcalá de Henares. According to the text, "this tragedy is also felt in our towns and cities," which is why the council wanted to show its support for the local community directly affected.
The document recalls that, at the request of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), on June 29, minutes of silence were observed in memory of the victims. The FEMP has encouraged local entities to activate emergency aid and channel contributions through humanitarian organizations.
A direct financial contribution
The financial aid of 6,000 euros will be used to support the population affected by the earthquakes. The City Council has explained that this amount is "a demonstration of the city's commitment to the people of Venezuela" and of the bond with Venezuelan neighbours who "live together every day" in Alcalá.
In addition to the financial contribution, the institutional declaration urges the promotion of informative campaigns, days of support, and events, as well as the provision of municipal buildings for solidarity actions organized by humanitarian entities. In this way, Alcalá joins the network of Spanish municipalities that have mobilized resources after the disaster.
An emergency that mobilizes all of Spain
The earthquakes of June 24 caused serious material damage and a health emergency in several regions of Venezuela. According to the declaration, rescue teams, medical personnel, and volunteers have been mobilized to assist the population. In Spain, the Venezuelan community is large, and many municipalities have felt the tragedy as their own.
The Alcalá de Henares City Council has made it clear that its support is not limited to financial aid: "we express our support and solidarity in these very difficult times," concludes the text approved unanimously.
