The Majadahonda City Council has mobilised human and material resources to assist in extinguishing the wildfires that are affecting the region, and its Príncipe Felipe sports centre temporarily housed 157 residents from Cenicientos.
The Majadahonda City Council has committed to the emergency response due to the severe wildfires impacting the Community of Madrid. Since last weekend, the municipality has made human and material resources available to the Integrated Operational Coordination Centre (CECOPI) to aid in firefighting efforts and assist those affected.
The mayor, Lola Moreno, along with much of her government team, has coordinated on the ground with the Local Police, the Majadahonda Emergency and Rescue Service (SERMAJ), and Civil Protection to address all actions requested by the competent authorities. Specifically, Majadahonda mobilised five members of Civil Protection and a 4x4 vehicle equipped with emergency kits and firefighting equipment to join the response operation.
The most significant gesture occurred last Saturday when the Príncipe Felipe sports centre in Majadahonda opened its doors to temporarily accommodate 157 residents from Cenicientos, evacuated due to the advancing flames. During their stay, those affected received care, water, and food thanks to the collaboration of the Majadahonda Business Circle, as well as municipal staff and volunteers.
Of the 157 people assisted, 97 were able to be picked up by family members or relocate by their own means. The rest were transferred to Alcalá de Henares, according to the instructions of the competent authorities. The mayor personally supervised the development of the stay and the transfer, expressing her support and solidarity to those affected on behalf of all the residents of Majadahonda. The councillor for Security and Emergencies, Ignacio Silván, and other members of the government team were also present.
Additionally, the City Council has offered available municipal emergency spaces at the 'Valle de la Oliva' senior residence, should they be needed to accommodate more evacuees. The Majadahonda Canine Integral Centre (CICAM) has also collaborated, taking in pets of evacuated individuals until capacity is reached, ensuring their temporary care until the situation normalises.
The City Council wishes to thank the selfless collaboration of the Security Forces and Corps, Emergency Services, municipal building cleaning staff, taxi drivers, local business owners, and parishes. The María Auxiliadora School and the company Mercadona have also offered their assistance. Furthermore, the Council has expressed gratitude to all the residents of Majadahonda who volunteered over the weekend.
The wildfires, which remain active in several areas of the Community of Madrid, have necessitated a large-scale operation in which Majadahonda has become a key support point. The mayor has reiterated the municipality's offer to continue collaborating with the operation in any necessary capacity.
Meanwhile, emergency services continue to work to control the flames, and it is expected that the evolution of the fires can be assessed in the coming hours. Residents of Majadahonda can rest assured, as the fire does not directly affect the municipality, but solidarity with those affected has been massive.
