Unemployment in Leganés fell in June to 7,896 people, with a year-on-year decrease of 3.72%, the largest among the major municipalities in southern Madrid. The city has reduced its unemployed by 305 compared to the previous year.

Leganés closed June with 7,896 unemployed individuals, according to the municipal report from the Community of Madrid. This figure represents 42 fewer unemployed than in May and 305 fewer than a year ago. The year-on-year decrease of 3.72% positions the town as the one with the most significant reduction in unemployment among the major municipalities in the metropolitan south.

This data allows Leganés to take pride in its performance compared to its neighbours, but with caveats. There are still nearly 8,000 residents registered on unemployment lists, a number that the City Council considers too high to celebrate.

Leganés improves more than Alcorcón, Getafe, Móstoles, and Fuenlabrada

In year-on-year comparisons, Leganés leads the reduction of unemployment among the five major municipalities in the south. Fuenlabrada decreased by 1.62%, Móstoles by 1.35%, Getafe by 1.26%, and Alcorcón by only 0.81%. Leganés doubles or triples the improvement of its neighbours.

In total numbers, Móstoles remains the municipality with the most unemployed: 9,018. It is followed by Fuenlabrada (8,788), Getafe (7,900), Leganés (7,896), and Alcorcón (6,859). Leganés is practically tied with Getafe, with only four fewer unemployed.

Fuenlabrada leads the monthly decrease while Alcorcón worsens

In the monthly comparison, the best figure is recorded by Fuenlabrada, with 134 fewer unemployed in June. Next is Móstoles, with 84 fewer. Leganés decreased by 42 people, ahead of Getafe, which reduced unemployment by 39. The negative note comes from Alcorcón, where unemployment increased by 40 people compared to the previous month.

For the residents of Leganés, the monthly evolution is positive but modest. The drop of 0.53% barely alleviates the pressure on families still seeking work.

Women continue to be the majority on unemployment lists

The report also highlights a clear gap in Leganés: of the 7,896 unemployed individuals, 4,799 are women and 3,097 are men. The impact is particularly severe among women over 45 years old, with 2,958 unemployed, the largest group in the entire local statistic.

By sector, services account for the majority of unemployment in Leganés, with 6,285 individuals. Far behind are construction (578), industry (449), agriculture (37), and the group with no previous employment (547).

The summary is clear: Leganés improves more than its major southern neighbours in year-on-year terms, but the local labour market still faces two structural problems: an excessive reliance on the services sector and a gender gap that cannot be corrected solely with good monthly figures.

The City Council of Leganés has stated that it will continue to promote active employment policies, especially aimed at women over 45, the most affected group. The coming months will be crucial to see if the trend consolidates.
