The Socialist spokesperson in the City Council, Reyes Maroto, and her deputy spokesperson, Enma López, have secured the necessary endorsements to compete in the PSOE primaries for the Madrid City Hall. The voting will take place on July 19.

Reyes Maroto and Enma López submitted their endorsements this Saturday, enabling them to run in the PSOE primaries for the Madrid City Hall. Both have met the minimum requirement of 823 signatures, equivalent to 15% of the capital's party membership. The polling date is set for July 19, and the winner will face the current mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida (PP), in the 2027 elections.

Maroto, who was a candidate in 2023, has been supported by the majority of the municipal group councillors and various officials from the Madrid PSOE. Although she has not disclosed the exact number of endorsements, she has assured that she has “more than enough”. On her part, López estimates that she has garnered around 1,000 endorsements, according to her calculations. Both have formalised their candidacy at the party headquarters on Santa Engracia Street.

Two profiles, one common goal

The contest pits two councillors against each other who already shared a campaign in 2023, when Maroto was the lead candidate and López was her campaign director and third on the list. Now, each presents a different project. Maroto claims to represent “illusion” and “hope”, advocating for a “project with roots, a team, commitment, and the trust of the members and thousands of neighbours” who have conveyed to her that “finally the PSOE has an alternative to win in 2027”.

López, on the other hand, has focused her campaign on the “avalmaratón”, a series of events across the socialist groups in Madrid. She offers a “positive, joyful, and exciting” alternative and reminds that the city of Madrid has been governed by the Socialist Party for 37 years. “It’s about time”, she has stated.

When asked if she would include Maroto in her team if she wins, López replied affirmatively, as well as to everyone in her project. Maroto, however, has refrained from commenting: “We have to take it one game at a time”, she said.

Óscar López, candidate for the Community

This Saturday, it was also confirmed that the Secretary General of the Madrid PSOE and Minister for Digital Transformation, Óscar López, will be the party's candidate for the Presidency of the Community of Madrid against Isabel Díaz Ayuso in 2027. He is the only one to have obtained the necessary endorsements (2,092), while the other pre-candidate, Silvia López Quivira, did not reach the minimum.

López has expressed his heartfelt thanks for the “more than 4,000 endorsements” received and has stated: “I am going to give it my all. Let’s be brave and let’s change Madrid!”.

For the residents of Madrid, these primaries will determine who will be the socialist alternative to Almeida's government. The voting on July 19 is only for party members, but the outcome will set the tone for the 2027 campaign. The winner will need to build a project that excites a citizenry that, according to polls, still leans predominantly towards the PP.
